This fan was composed of
feathers mounted in the end of a handle. These fans were decorated using
Chinese calligraphy pens. With the time various forms and shapes of these hand
fans came into use. Also the nature of the materials, such as bamboo, feathers
or silk changed with time. In ancient Japan hand fans were greatly influenced
by the developments in China. The earliest visual representation of fans in
Japan goes back to 6th century CE. The folding hand-fans in Japan date back to
6th to 9th century. The first was the court fan, called the “Akomeogi” called
so after the court women’s dress named “Akome”.
