Amrita Sher-Gil : The most expensive painter of India



Amrita Sher-Gil spent the formative years of her life in Europe. She dabbled in paint from her early childhood. Her intelligent Hungarian mother, Marie Antoinette, wife of an Indian Umrao Singh Sher-Gil, detected her hidden talent and encouraged her to paint. She took her to Italy and Paris, the hotbeds of artistic activity and the birthplace of many a historic art movement in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

THE FIRST SWISS RAILWAY MAIL VAN



The first Swiss railway mail van went into operation on the Zurich-Brugg line on 12th October 1857. The picture postcard (shown hereunder), issued by Swiss Post on 22nd May 1990 shows one of the oldest mail vans, after a model from PTT Museum in Berne. The design of the stamp on the back is based on the smart insignia of the Swiss Federal Post used from about 1880 until after 1920. In those days, they featured prominently on post coaches and carts, the first postbuses, stamp wending machines and railway mail vans.
