WARTIME RATIONING GIVEN BIRTH TO “BIKINI”: As part of wartime rationing, the U.S.
Government in 1943 ordered a 10 percent reduction in the fabric used in woman’s
swimwear. This given the fashion houses further liberty and they pushed the
boundaries of bathing suits, exposing considerably more flesh than ever before
by off went the skirt panel and out came the bare midriff. One piece bathing
suits turned into two pieces. At beaches across the country, men paid close
attention to women doing their patriotic duty led government to bann Bikini.
