World Heritage Sites; Part Four


Different Heritage Sites of Switzerland

The World  Heritage list includes 936  cultural and natural properties of the exceptional importance and outstanding universal value are under the protection of UNESCO’s World Heritage convention. The convention concerning the protection of the world cultural and natural heritage was adopted by UNESCO General Conference in 1972 and is proved to be the most important instrument for the protection and conservation of these World Heritage worldwide. This convention is also significant in its universal application – World Heritage sites belong to all the world citizenry, irrespective of the sovereignty of the territory on which they are located.

Switzerland ratified the world Heritage convention in 1975. Today there 11 (eight cultural and three natural) properties in Switzerland designated as World Heritage. Out of these eleven properties, there are three trans-boundary properties spread over beyond the geographical boundary of Switzerland. The world Heritage in Switzerland is described hereunder;
